General information on Compensated Work Therapy:

  • Employment Skills Group – open to all veterans, the Employment Skills Group is an employment based curriculum to help veterans seek out and obtain a career. It is held the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Louisville V.A.M.C., 800 Zorn Ave., Louisville, KY 40206, from 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm in Room D010.
  • Supported Employment – Primarily for veterans who are diagnosed with mental illness. The veteran must be receiving mental health care from a V.A. provider and is referred to the program by that provider. SE functions as a free employee assistance program for competitive employment with unlimited support through personal meeting and phone calls with the veteran and with the veteran’s employer. CWT/SE staff pre-screen applicants to available competitive job opportunities and refer qualified Veterans for consideration, staff also help with resume development and job application. Employers who hire CWT Veterans will have access to post-employment support services, employer education, along with worksite analysis and Tax Credits for Targeted Jobs.
  • Transitional Work Experience - A pre-employment vocational assessment program for Veterans operating in VA medical centers and communities across our nation. CWT/TWE participants are assessed by vocational professionals, pre-screened and matched to the specific job requirements. Participants who are homeless or being treated for substance abuse have preference but the program is not exclusively limited to those veterans. Participants are selected through a competitive interview process. Typically the CWT/TWE assignment lasts for 3 to 6 months as negotiated between program staff and the participating company. At the Lousville V.A.M.C., participants work at the hospital in temporary positions, are paid a stipend for work (tax free minimum wage), and are not employees of the hospital.CWT/TWE functions like a temp-to-hire labor service so the expectations of Veteran workers is the same as that of other employees within the company. This program helps veterans develop work experience and build references.
