The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to individuals who meet certain requirements.

VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including: people making $67,000 or less, people with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

To find a VITA center near you, go to:    https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/

In addition to VITA, the TCE program offers free tax help, for people who are over 60 years old  and have questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

When looking for a TCE site, keep in mind that a majority of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation's Tax Aide program. To locate the nearest AARP TCE Tax-Aide site between January and April use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.

For more information on VITA and other help with taxes, go to “Topics” on the home page and click on “Money & Debts.”
